Bought a 2015 Alterra last year new and was out with the guys for a ride. Riding back to the camp we were on a smooth surface so I decided to pin it to see what it would do. I think there is something causing it to not completely rev out as I only hit 88 k/hr (55 miles/hour). The worst part was a Yamaha blew right by me and it was a 700 carburated bike. Dealership told me it should go much faster (I'm fine with going slower) but I would like to know if the performance is being affected by the clutch possibly not opening enough to allow the belt to drop. Is there a manual available so I can see how to disassemble it to figure it out.
Thanks

Did it feel like it was hitting the rev limiter? Stock tires?

Yes, go to countrycat.com, look under the technical section and in there you can select your year and model for a service manual.
You bought it new last year and this is the first time that you've put full throttle to it?
How many miles are on the machine?
Is everything stock on the machine?
Why would you think that the clutch is not opening up all the way?

It wasn't cutting out or anything correct? Like when you try to go fast in reverse. 55mph is a suspicious number, a electronic limited speed number??????
Get the manual and youtube has videos on the clutches.

My '17 Alterra hit 59 mph first time I pinned it. It had about 125 miles on it at the time. Seemed like a pig compared to our 09 700 ( same engine and gear ratio ) They sit a little higher so wind drag is a factor. Last time out it hit 62 mph so its getting better. How many miles are on it? We now have 235 on ours.

Switch the display to tachometer, run it out in Lo range until it hits rev limiter. My 2014 hits it at 7250rpms. Now see what you get in Hi. I suspect, if you don't get 7250 in both ranges, the ecm is holding it back , until fully broken in. I actually re-clutched mine to lower top speed to 60 mph and give better bottom end. Don't know why they would tune the Alterra different than the older 700's, but...

I put 27 inch Mud Lites on it almost right off the hop. It was a non current so a year old just not sold and still new (zero miles on it when I bought it).
When at full throttle it does not cut out just seems sluggish at top end but snappy on the bottom end so there is not a problem there.
Thanks for the help there is a couple things that were brought up to try (put the gauges on rpm and check as well as the manual)

If you have 27" tires than you are going faster than 55mph on the speedo. 59-60 mph
How many miles now? Most machines need a a few hundred miles to be fully broken in.
Might need some clutching with the tires to wind out, too.

Did the dealer enter the unlock code ? The factory puts a restriction on speed and the dealer has to enter that code when the customer purchases it

Cat's are pretty much pigs in the speed department. And unless you do something to increase their performance they will loose to a equal class machine most times. Put on bigger heavier tires and it's amplified. As FirecatV2 said, your probably getting closer to the 60mph but because of the tire diameter difference your not seeing it on your speedo. If you have a GPS or a smartphone it's easy to compare your actual speed to your speedo indicated speed (which is nothing more than speed indicated from tire rotation not actual speed over land). Read that speed using GPS and let us know what your seeing!

The 09 700 I had was respectable against other brands. Holeshot was even, top speed was even, where it lacked was mid range against other brands. can am's 650 beats the Cats 700 everywhere and it should with 15 more hp. ( approx) Our older 700's suzook powered 07's had better midrange than the H1 but they had a different final gear ratio. 3:60 to 1 compared to 3:10 to 1. So one would think the 09 H1 would do better on top, but not so much, they were equal. Here's a little tip when racing someone, if they pull a full length on you, get behind them and draft them. It really works. Your 700 with larger tires on it is going to really be a pig in mid range. Throw the 25's back on and re-race, it will be much closer. cats 700 is the lowest hp 700 class quad on the market, people have prodded Arctic Cat to up the ponies since 08 to no avail. I would have thought by now there would have an aftermarket cam or high compression head for this model. there isnt much that can be done to the H1- engine wise- Some say a certain year ecu from a mud pro gives an additional 7 hp. Never tried it. Some say that its a myth.

Thanks everyone for the replys I will try some out the next time I get out on the open road. I don't really need to go faster was just wondering if this was normal.
Have fun and safe riding everyone

Hey, I was wondering if you still had the 55mph limit issue with the 700? I would like to know how and if you fixed it. Any information is greatly appreciated
